For the first time, Torino and Piemonte, north-western Italian region located at the center of the most dynamic European bioscience area, participate to BIO International Convention in Atlanta (18th-21st May). At booth 4301, within the Italian joint stand coordinated by the Italian Trade Commission, Piemonte illustrates its abilities, know-how and cutting edge position for production and research on the national and European level. The participation, which also includes the presence of 4 top class companies, is promoted by the Torino Chamber of Commerce and is organized by Piemonte Agency in cooperation with Bioindustry Park.
Italy accounts for 15% of the biotech European enterprises - of which more than 200 companies are directly involved in the biotech innovation field - and has a pharmaceutical market ranking sixth in the world. In this context, the Piedmontese biotechnology sector is able to satisfy the needs of the most demanding markets, in particular the American one which is in search of new technologies and solutions to respond to the policies for the development of the sector promoted by the new governmental administration. The Piedmontese bioscience industry (biotech, pharma, med-tech etc) - which is composed by SMEs and multinational groups such as Merck-Serono, Bracco Imaging, Takeda, Diasorin Antibioticos and Sorin Cardio - plays an important role with its 100 companies that employ more than 3,000 people and is constantly developing thanks to the birth of innovative enterprises in the pharmaceutical, parapharmaceutical and diagnostic sectors. In particular, Piemonte has a strong tradition in the biotechnology field - second to Lombardia for number of companies - and works in all areas of application: green (food), grey (industrial processes) and red (health), the last one being the most present on the territory.
In addition to the traditional manufacturing industry, in the last few decades Piemonte has widened and diversified its economic structure, catching up remarkable results in sectors with a high level of research and innovation. Today it is the first Italian region for private investments in R&D and in biotech start up companies and is among the first ten European regions with the highest employment rate in the hi-tech manufacturing sectors. The network of  research-centers in Piemonte includes six scientific and technological parks, more than 200 private and public R&D centres and nearly 400 laboratories. Into details, the researchers engaged in the biotech, pharmaceutical and medical sectors are approximately 1,500, the public research units are 800 (60% of them are active in biomedicine): they all can count on efficient and effective collaborations among companies, Universities, research and training centers, science and technology parks (for example: CNR, Institute of Cancer Research of Candiolo and Bioindustry Park), laboratories, incubators and venture capital firms (Eporgen Venture and Piemontech). In addition, the achievement of important results in Piemonte is due to the synergy with the capabilities in the ICT sector, in the electronics and the nanotechnology fields, which facilitates the development of best in class skills in bioinformatics, diagnostic analyses and biomedical equipment planning.
