Page contents: June 2009 - Aerospace: the Italian excellence from Torino-Piemonte at Le Bourget

Piemonte, North-Western Italian region, attends Paris Air Show Le Bourget (15-21 June) presenting 10 top-class companies. The participation – organised at Hall 1, stand G 165 of the Italian pavilion headed by AIAD, the Italian Industries Association for Aerospace and System Defense, and MOD (Ministry of Defense)– is promoted by the Torino Chamber of Commerce, with the support of Piemonte Regional Authority, and managed by Piemonte Agency within Torino Piemonte Aerospace, project providing international buyers with a preferential channel to meet and start business with a selection of 66 top class aerospace and defense enterprises based in the region.
“We are participating at Le Bourget, together with Torino Piemonte Aerospace team and a delegation of first-class enterprises, in order to promote the quality of Piemonte aerospace industry, whose 2008 aircrafts and space vehicles exportation is worth more than 730 millions euros, with a 36.6% increase from 2007” – remarks  Alessandro Barberis, President of the Torino Chamber of Commerce.
Tradition, innovation and competitiveness are the main features of the Piedmontese aerospace companies: on stand international players have the opportunity of finding possible new partners which guarantee cutting-edge technology and internationally certified quality. Moreover, on booth visitors and buyers can also acquaint with another protagonist of the regional aerospace framework: the Piedmontese Aerospace District, coordination board constituted by the main regional institutions to develop and foster the excellence of the aerospace industry, supporting financially the scientific and entrepreneurial capacities of the local companies.
At the Piedmontese exhibition area, central focus is given to Aerospace & Defense Meetings (Torino, 28-29 October), the only international business convention in Italy dedicated to the aerospace and defense industry, successful event organised within the project Torino Piemonte Aerospace. The initiative, held for the first time in March 2008, registered surprising numbers: 1.500 professionals, 6.000 one-to-one meetings and 21 conferences and workshops. The best international companies joined the event: Finmeccanica, Alenia Aeronautica, Aermacchi, Piaggio Aero, Thales Alenia Space, Selex Galileo, Agusta Westland, Boeing, Eads, Dassault Aviation, Northrop Grumann, Tupolev, Messier Dowty, Avio, Pratt & Whitney, Microtecnica, Elbit.
The aeronautical and space sector in Italy is one of the national manufacturing milestones in terms of integrated high technology systems. Seventh in the world and fourth in Europe, it boasts a turnover of 6,1 billion € and a workforce composed of 38.000 high-qualified employees. In particular, Piemonte and especially the area surrounding its capital city, Torino, is home to an important aerospace and defence pole: the five principal companies (Alenia Aeronautica, Avio Group, Microtecnica, Selex, Thales Alenia Space) employ 7.000 people and record a turnover of 1,3 billion €; alongside there is a group of some 400 SMEs totalling 3.000 employees and a turnover of 500 million € in the aerospace industry alone.
The high technical expertise of the companies, both in manufacturing and services, enables them to provide a complete range of high-quality products: aircrafts, engines, propellers, satellites, infrastructure, ground and on-board control systems etc. Thanks to this wide and specialised offer and to the advanced technologies applied, the Piedmontese aerospace industry has become internationally renown. In fact, it is not just the large companies, the market leaders, who are present on overseas markets: more than half the local SMEs boast foreign buyers, from both Europe and beyond, amongst their clients. In many cases, their international presence takes the form of agreements, whether purely for commercial ends, production, or for the exchange of know-how, and sometimes it also comprises the creation of branches and units abroad. This capacity to face the international competition is above all linked to the quality they can offer: most of the Piedmontese companies are in fact capable of meeting the demands of the buyers who must respect standards imposed by product or process certification, or specific quality standards in the sector.
