Press Area / March 2008 - ICT from Torino and Piemonte at Cebit

17 companies from Piemonte, a region of northwestern Italy, will be present at the important CeBIT trade fair: 14 will be inside the “Future Park” pavilion, in the Italian area coordinated by ICE (Hall 9 - stand B09), two will be in Hall 12 Stands C82/1 and E59/2, and one in Hall 17 Stand B50. Their participation is being organised as part of the Think Up project, which is promoting a selection of Piedmontese companies that excel in the ICT field, on the world markets, and offers international clients a fast track to contact them and to establish collaborative relationships. The project is the brainchild of the Torino Chamber of Commerce, and it is managed by Piemonte Agency for Investments, Export and Tourism, in collaboration with Torino Wireless and CSI-Piemonte, and with a contribution from Regione Piemonte.

Piemonte is participating at CeBIT for the third time, presenting leading technologies developed in the region, which include: the Criptofonino or encrypted cell phone (a cell phone that prevents tapping), the E-wine label (the entire history of a wine bottle recorded in an RFID tag and end users’ devices receiving traceability information), the supercluster (a highly reliable server that guarantees continuous functioning even in emergencies). Piedmontese SMEs are also represented at Future Match, a collateral event that organises B2B appointments for European companies.

Piemonte, and the city and province of Torino in particular, is the home of numerous ICT companies that are highly competitive in terms of variety, quality and security. The range embraces all segments of the manufacturing tradition in the region: aerospace, industrial automation, automotive, electronic components, domotics and security, e-government, e-health, games and multimedia, generic and specialist hardware, software for companies, telecommunications and infomobility. The sector includes more than 13,000 firms, accounting for 3% of the entrepreneurial fabric of the region. 65% of these are concentrated in the Torino area and include ICT manufacturing companies, intangible services and telecommunications, the wholesale trade, and the leasing of assets of the content industry.

The importance of the sector in Piemonte is underlined by the increase in the number of firms: between 2000 and 2006 they increased by more than one fifth (+23%), whereas the region’s entrepreneurial fabric increased by approximately 5% as a whole. The number of employed people is now between 105,000 and 118,000, between 5.85% and 6.57% of the total employed population in Piemonte.

More importantly, Piemonte also confirms its international vocation in this field. In 2006. Piedmontese ICT exports totalled Euro 1,445 million, of 9.6% of national ICT exports. The European Union accounts for 71.5%, particularly France (30.9%). Germany and the United Kingdom are also important partners, accounting for 17.2% and 11.7%. Other important areas for ICT trade are the Far East, North America, and Central and South America.
