Qatar is more and more gripped by the business opportunities offered by Piemonte, Italian north western region on the border line with France. The next event involving the two territories will be from 28-30 October when 25 Piedmontese companies, almost all active in construction and furnishing, will be presenting and offering their excellent products and services to some 70 potential Qatari partners. In addition, on 28th October, Sheik Khalifa Bin Jassim Bin Mohamed Al-Thani, as the Chairman of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Doha, and Mr Guido Bolatto, General Manager of the Torino Chamber of Commerce and Industry – who is leading the delegation – are signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Institutions in order to strengthen commercial relations in the two areas.

The building development of Qatar necessitates international cooperation and Piemonte can be the right partner to sustain such an incredible construction booming in Qatar. The entrepreneurial mission, organised by the Torino Chamber of Commerce and supported operatively by Piemonte Agency for Investments, Export and Tourism and its experts, gathers the top class regional companies to offer the Qatari market the best of local production: 22 enterprises belong to the construction and furnishing sectors, 1 produces beauty treatments equipment for spas and gyms, 1 is active in the ICT sector while another one in the security field.
“In the last few years, the Chambers of Commerce of Doha and Torino have been working together very efficiently and the idea of this workshop arose within this fruitful collaboration” – Mr Bolatto says – “We are honoured to present a selection of our best companies to answer the needs of such a promising land which is at the centre of an incredible industrial, building, commercial, and tourist development”.

Piemonte is a rich Northern Italian region, a land of excellence with approximately 465,000 enterprises (out of 5 million all over Italy) organized in extremely innovative, flexible and efficient clusters. It is one of the most industrialized regions of Italy and can offer to the Qatari market a wide range of capabilities and a unique ensemble of manufacturing variety: automotive, aerospace, mechanics, design, agro-food, ICT, gold & jewelry, building materials, home textiles, furnishing and fittings. Besides, thanks to its strategical geographical position at the heart of Europe, Piemonte is also a main gateway to the EU markets. The territory, in fact, also offers foreign investors a wide range of opportunities in terms of relocation and business expansion, everything topped up by high living standards and services.

Indeed, Piemonte and its capital city Torino are not new in Qatar. In the last 3 years the Torino Chamber of Commerce has been more and more focusing its activities on the Qatari Peninsula. With the help of Piemonte Agency, since 2006 it organises the regional participation at Project Qatar - leading building trade exhibition and access to the most lucrative construction markets in the Gulf. The event is the perfect scenario to present the best of the Piedmontese production, tie partnerships with local companies and present Piedmontese companies as challenging competitors in international calls for tenders for construction works, building materials and services supply contracts. For the Piedmontese exhibitors, Project Qatar 2006 was a successful debut at the fair where several business relations with some Qatari companies started. At the 2007 edition, 17 out of 20 Italian companies were from Piemonte. The delegation that will attend Project Qatar 2008 is already set at the starting line.

On the other hand, Qatar is also interested to present the ongoing development projects and get in touch with Piedmontese economic system for future cooperation. Last November the Torino Chamber of Commerce hosted a delegation from Qatar, lead by the Qatari Businessmen Association, and a Country Presentation was dedicated to present the business opportunities offered by Qatar. On this occasion, 2 Qatari multinationals, 1 industrial group and a consulting company had the chance of meeting local enterprises active in the fields environment, energy, logistics, building materials and furnishing and get a concrete sample of the best of the regional production offer and skills.

Piemonte and Italy mainly export to Qatar mechanical equipment (23,4%), metals and metal products (14%). The first semester of 2007 confirms the growing commercial trend from Italy, Piemonte and Torino to Qatar. In fact, exports to Qatar respectively registered +61,5 % (749,2 million euro), +44,3% (12,7 million euro) and +80,8% (4,6 million euro). In 2006, instead, while on a national scale a positive increase can be noticed, the data related to Piemonte registered a slight drop. However this trend did not happen in Torino and its province, which, compared to 2005, recorded a +29% in the exportations directed to Qatar.
