Press Area / October 2012 - At ITS World Congress the top class challenge to sustainable mobility supplied by Torino-Piemonte (Italy)

Piemonte, north-west Italian region, is attending for the first time the 19th ITS World Congress (Wien, 22-26 October 2012) with 6 exhibitors (hall B, stand E60), all on the cutting edge in the development of ICT technologies. The delegation is organised by Think Up, project offering international buyers a fast track to meet and develop business with a selection of top class ICT companies from Torino-Piemonte, promoted and supported by the Torino Chamber of Commerce and managed by Piemonte Agency, with the backing of the technical partners Torino Wireless Foundation and the ICT Innovation Cluster.

ICT, intelligent transportation and sustainable mobility are the main topics on which the Piedmontese companies participating are focused. They present their latest products and ITS solutions for the transport and road safety and propose to the demanding visitors of the fair advanced technologies in green cars, human-machine interaction and public traffic monitoring, ready to work synergy to design new products and solutions.

The development of intelligent transport systems has become a relevant topic for Piemonte companies which have gained a wealth of experience and reached important results in this field. Indeed, Torino and Piemonte are frontrunners in the ITS sector. This know-how dates back to the 1980s with the very first intelligent traffic light systems connected directly with the public transportation system's vehicles to assure their priority at the major intersections. It continues today, with new advanced technological devices installed inside the vehicles, enabling during a trip to entertain a dialogue with systems and infrastructures allowing the drivers to gain real time information on traffic conditions, congestions, queues, road blocks and works in progress.

Overall, Piemonte is a favourable environment for sustainable mobility thanks to its strong tradition in 2 strategic sectors: automotive and ICT, with the presence of important companies, research centres and university programmes. The cooperation among industry, institutions and knowledge institutes are driving factors for the development of sustainable mobility in Torino Piemonte.
Torino is the historic capital of automotive engineering, but it is also a hub of technologically advanced incubators expert in all the sciences related to the development of sustainable mobility, and able to compete in all international markets. Furthermore, the region can count on companies and research centers are able to develop and integrate ICT tools aimed at collecting, processing, managing and transmit all the vehicle data, the state of the infrastructure and the information useful to the users. ICT is in fact another top class field of production that Piemonte boasts, the region being is the Italian birthplace of cinema, television, telephone and computer industries, MP3 and of major companies like Vodafone, Infostrada, Seat, Telecom, Olivetti and home to over 8,000 companies with a unique tradition and multi-sector know-how and approach in the field.
