Life Sciences

Converging technologies and the R&D & innovation system: from Piemonte-Italy, a unique springboard for the future of life sciences

In Italy, there is a new beating heart for life sciences: it is Piemonte

In the new competitive scenario of life sciences, the Italian North-Western region Piemonte plays an important role thanks to its high quality public healthcare system, its top research Medical School and the strong industrial heritage. The skills existing in Piemonte in sectors such as ICT, electronics and nanotechnologies that are considered converging technologies, have favoured the development of significant results and expertise in bioinformatics, diagnostics, data sciences, new material and biomedical equipment, micro and nanotechnologies, strongly fostering the innovation ecosystem in interdisciplinary fields.

Alongside, several technological platforms already operating in the territory, such as automotive, aerospace, food farming, biotechnology and new consolidating ones, such as smart manufacturing, nanotechnologies, Internet Of Things, further strongly support a converging technologies approach into life science sector. Meaningful examples can be find in some of the projects developed within the Health and Wellness Technology Platform a program promoted by Regione Piemonte in the framework of the ERDF – POR 2014 – 2020.

For instance CANP is a project that involves the Universtity of Torino and the Politecnico of Torino along with several public institutions and private companies for a total investment of more than 11 million euros. The project aims to develop new computerized organizational models for the management of home hospitalization exploiting the Internet of Medical Things, Artificial Intelligence and data processing.

Furthermore the University and the Politecnico of Torino are working together, along with numerous private companies, in order to create the new centre in High-Performance Computing for Artificial Intelligence (HPC4AI), a competence centre that aims to facilitate scientific research and engineering in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Analytics with applications in many different sectors and that would provide a large, highly accessible and robust storage space for life science research.

In Piemonte the presence of an integrated system with 4 science and technology parks, 7 Innovation Clusters and business incubators, plays an essential role in innovation and technology transfer. More precisely Biopmed – the innovation cluster dedicated to health care, established by Regione Piemonte in the framework of the ERDF – POR 2007-2013 program and led by Bioindustry Park, follows the development of numerous R&D projects some of which were born from converging technologies, for example MUSTable and SSPnano. The former aims to the creation of a modular electromechanical operating table with remote control, thanks to the composite materials which allows and enhance the most modern procedures in diagnostic and surgery. The latter is a new tissue processor for histological exams, a potentially revolution in the field possible only by the overcoming of complex issues in different areas, from mechanic to electronic, from materials engineering to informatics, from chemical to biomolecular processes.

The richness provided by this cross-sectorial approach is a winning feature that allows Piemonte to rank high in the global life sciences scene.
