The Texan company selected Piemonte and its companies’ top know-how to explore the new economic opportunities of Space
The first ever commercial airlock that will operate on the International Space Station - ISS will leave from Torino, capital city of Piemonte, North-Western Italian region.
It is called Bishop and will serve as a commercial portal to outer space: it represents the first step towards a new economy for scientific research, technological development as well as human and goods transport.
The new module is the result of the collaboration between the Texan company NanoRacks, Thales Alenia Space - which developed 50% of the housing modules of the ISS in the region - ALTEC and by a pool of Piemonte companies: this partnership was created to take full advantage of the commercial opportunities of space exploration and in-orbit-services.
Thales Alenia Space’s Piemonte-based office produced and tested Bishop’s critical pressure shell, several secondary structures and some components linked to the docking system. The whole development took place in record time - only a year - thanks to the know-how of Piemonte companies that have contributed to the different phases of the project: ABS Group srl, Alfa Meccanica, Aviotec, ByTest, Chiarlone, HTF0, Novo Meccanica, SIPAL.
Piemonte confirmed itself as a pioneer region in the new Space business frontier. Its production chain is a fundamental advantage as confirmed by the decision of NanoRacks to settle its European headquarters here. This investment further enriches the regional aerospace district, one of the most important on the global scene.
