The Automotive Industry

The future of the automotive industry was born in Piemonte

In the northwest of Italy, in Piemonte, the history and future of the automotive industry come together.

Piemonte, region where FIAT, now FCA, was born is the emblem of productive capacity and technological innovation in Italy. Yet Piemonte represents more than just its manufacturing past.

Here Regione Piemonte (Regional Government)launched the Smart Specialisation Strategy (S3) to reinforce Research and Innovation to transform and develop traditional industrial sectors by investing in technology to respond to challenges. This strategy is fully implemented in the Cohesion Policy 2014-2020 and the Europe Horizon 2020. As a result, there are plenty of enthusiastic players, including automotive companies, that are implementing industrial research and development projects for advanced mobility.

Whether it is electric or hybrid, the automobile of the future will be, most importantly, intelligent. So FCA decided to aim at hybrid vehicles, extremely low emission engines and the development of technologies that allow vehicles to communicate with each other and with the infrastructure. The project altogether is worth over 90 million euro to which Regione Piemonte is contributing nearly 9 million euro of structural funds. Along the same lines we find an investment of over 5 million euro by Olsa to develop intelligent headlights that can detect road conditions and accidents and communicate them directly to other vehicles.

The vehicles of the future will not only be able to communicate with each other but also with themselves! Yes, there will be communication among the individual components. What is more, the American multinational ITT established its new advanced research centre in Piemonte to develop “smartpads”, i.e. brakes that acquire data and transmit it to the car engine to optimally execute the “intelligent braking” of autonomous vehicles.

ITT is developing “regenerative braking” which is crucial to the energy management of electric vehicles. The autonomy of electric vehicles is one of the sector’s priorities, garnering considerable focus and dedication ‒ and once again Piemonte is on the frontlines of research to find the most innovative solutions. From weight reduction to the efficiency of processes: every aspect is taken into account to improve the performance of electric cars. The Japanese Denso Thermal System in its Piemonte factory is improving its engine-cooling systems and climate control with an investment of nearly 11 million euro. Then the Indian company Endurance is also collaborating with Teksid on the testing of aluminium components and new technologies for making engines lighter.

Thanks to this capacity for research and development of its universities and research centres, to public support and to the Smart Specialisation Strategy, Piemonte is keeping on playing a leading and innovative role in the new era of mobility. Not surprisingly, Piemonte will host the first edition of VTM - Vehicle and Transportation Technology Innovation Meetings, taking place in Torino on 27 and 28 November 2018. The convention will bring together the global automotive community that will inspire a packed b2b agenda, conferences and technical workshops. The programme will feature the presence and contribution of international players and panel sessions to discuss the future trends of the mobility sector: hybrid and electric vehicles, autonomous driving and new models of sustainable mobility, connectivity and integration with infrastructure and telecommunications, cybersecurity, technologies for imminent road mobility.
In Piemonte the future is now.
