Piemonte fine wine and food tradition, appreciated all over the world, is one of the symbols of Italian excellence, featuring many typical and wholesome products, rich in quality and variety. Following the priorities expressed by the Agriculture Department of the Region, all international activities carried out by Piemonte Agency aim to promote local products and strengthen the region's image as a prosperous land. The Agrifood Marketing team plans promotional and entrepreneurial activities and coordinates guided educational tours, tastings and the participation in international events where buyers can discover and start business relations with the top-class local traditional and organic producers.
Piemonte is a region of great tastes, with a wide range of delicacies of exceptional high quality, based on artisan or semi-artisan techniques, including a wide spectrum of specialties: wines and spirits, sweets and chocolates, cheeses, cured meats, rice, pasta, the prestigious truffle and fruit (mainly apples, kiwi, plums and peaches). Among these typical products the Ministry of Agriculture, upon request of Piemonte Region, has appointed 369 products as PAT (an Italian Geographical Indication protecting "traditional" food), 12 as PDO (Protected Denomination Origin) products (9 of these are cheeses), and 5, among which the Piemonte hazelnut, as IGP (Protected Geographical Indication).
The productions of wine and rice are particularly important and appreciated worldwide.
The 14 DOCG wines (out of 36 in Italy) and the 44 DOC wines (out of 317 in Italy) registers approximately 80% of the total regional output, mostly coming from about 20 autochthonous grape varieties, among which Nebbiolo (with 4 DOCG: Barolo, Barbaresco, Ghemme and Gattinara), Barbera, Dolcetto and Moscato. Piemonte represents 60% of the national rice production and 30% of the European production, with 120.000 hectares of cultivated areas. The plain in the eastern part of the region - namely in the Vercelli, Novara and Alessandria provinces - is in fact the best quality rice growing area in Italy and Europe with a production of 0,8 millions tons per year. Since august 2007 "Riso di Baraggia Biellese e Vercellese" is the first and unique PDO rice in Italy.
