AGC Flat Glass Italia’s investment and growth journey in Piemonte: Cuneo as a strategic European hub for flat glass

 AGC Flat Glass Italia is part of the Japanese AGC Group, one of the world's leading manufacturers of flat glass for the construction and industrial sectors. Operating since 1963, the Cuneo plant is one of the Group's key European production sites for the manufacture and processing of glass for the construction and automotive industries. Covering approximately 360,000 square metres and employing more than 200 people, including both direct employees and specialised contractors, the facility produces float glass and a comprehensive range of high-performance glass products, combining technological innovation, product quality and a strong commitment to sustainability.

The project in Piemonte

AGC's investment in Piemonte represents a successful example of long-term industrial development, built on the continuity of foreign direct investment, technological innovation and the enhancement of local expertise. Today, the Cuneo plant stands as one of the Group's flagship European production facilities and a key contributor to the competitiveness of Italy's flat glass industry.

The development of the Cuneo plant reflects a long-standing commitment by international investors, whose continuous investments have transformed the site into a strategic manufacturing hub within the AGC Group. The first major phase of international investment began in the early 1970s, when the US-based company PPG Industries became a shareholder and supported the construction of the Float production line, one of the most advanced glass manufacturing technologies available at the time. This investment significantly increased production capacity and laid the foundations for the site's long-term industrial growth. In 1998, the Cuneo facility became part of the Belgian group Glaverbel, then partly owned by the Japanese company Asahi Glass Co. (AGC). This marked a new stage of development, strengthening the Group's manufacturing presence in Piemonte and driving further investment in higher value-added glass processing technologies.

Since the establishment of the AGC brand in 2007, the Japanese Group has continued to invest extensively in the plant through a comprehensive industrial modernisation programme. Key milestones include the installation of Italy's first magnetron coating line for high-performance low-emissivity glass, the launch of the Matelux acid-etched glass production line, and the complete refurbishment of the Float production line in 2017, supported by an investment of approximately €25 million.
These investments have increased production capacity to around 600 tonnes of glass per day, improved manufacturing efficiency, reduced environmental impact and expanded the plant's portfolio of high-performance products for sustainable construction. At the same time, AGC has reinforced its commitment to decarbonisation, circular economy initiatives and increased use of recycled glass, further strengthening the Cuneo facility as a long-term strategic investment in Piemonte and as one of the Group's leading European manufacturing sites.
