October 2008 – 8 leading companies at Gitex 2008 (19-23 October) come from Piemonte – North Western Italian region hosting a promising Ict cluster. They show at booth E6-30, Hall 6 at Gitex Business Solutions pavilion IT Solutions area. Their participation is one of the activities carried out by Think Up,  the project offering international buyers a reserved lane to meet a selection of best in class Ict companies and develop business and cooperation with them. Think Up is promoted by the Torino Chamber of Commerce and is managed by highly experienced technical partners such as Torino Wireless Foundation, CSI-Piemonte (Consortium for Information Systems) and Piemonte Agency for Investments, Export and Tourism.

Last year at Gitex, Think Up Ict companies and products were highly appreciated by international buyers and important Middle Eastern distributors signed commercial agreements on stand.  Reliability and high quality standards are among the main features that made the Piedmontese Ict famous worldwide. The region, in fact, has a strong Ict tradition, being home to highly competitive companies that offer a wide range in the productive and commercial offer, guarantee of excellence, competitiveness and breakthrough innovation.

The variety of products provided by the Piedmontese Ict sector covers all fields of the traditional regional manufacture: aerospace, industrial automation, automotive, electrical components, home & building automation and security, e-government, e-health, games & multimedia, enterprise software and hardware, telecommunications and intelligent transport systems. The total number of Ict enterprises amounts to 13.250, equalling 3% of the whole entrepreneurial regional fabric. Among these, 65%, namely some 8.510 companies, are located in Torino and its surroundings. In detail, these are software and TLC companies, but also multimedia products wholesale trade and rent businesses.

The importance of the sector in the region is witnessed by the increasing number of enterprises on the territory: the years between 2000 and 2006 recorded a +23%, while the total entrepreneurial growth of the regional fabric reached about 5%. The number of employees of the sector today counts between 105.000 and 118.000 workers, that is to say amid 5,85% and 6,57% of the total regional occupation share.

In addition, Piedmontese Ict has a strong international vocation and is becoming for the Emirates a new supplier and partner. In fact, the data recorded the end of 2007 show that the local export of ICT goods towards the EAU reached a total 12,97 million Euro, + 61,7% + 97,7%, respectively in 2006 and 2004. Piedmontese Ict export to the EAU is mainly concentrated on 3 productions: office equipment, hardware and software solutions (38,5%, i.e. 4,9 million Euro), cables and wiring (30,6%, i.e. 3,9 million Euro), instruments and measure equipment (27,6%, 3,5 million Euro).
